The Medford Public Schools Elementary Reading Department provides targeted small-group instruction based on each student’s literacy profile. Reading instruction focuses on foundational literacy skills, including letter-name and letter-sound identification, phonemic awareness, phonics for reading and spelling, and reading fluency.
Assessment Schedule - DIBELS
The DIBELS assessment is used to identify students who may be at risk for reading difficulties, by measuring key early literacy skills such as phonemic awareness, decoding, and fluency. It provides educators with timely data to guide instruction and intervention so students can receive targeted support as early as possible.
In Massachusetts, the use of DIBELS supports compliance with the state’s Dyslexia Screening requirements under Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 71, Section 57A, which requires schools to screen students for potential reading challenges and provide evidence-based interventions. The assessment helps schools monitor student progress and ensure that literacy instruction aligns with state expectations for early identification and support.
- Students are screened using DIBELS three times a year: September, January, and May.
