Superintendent's Weekly Memo - October 25, 2024

Superintendent's Weekly Memo - October 25, 2024
Dr. Marice Edouard-Vincent, Superintendent

Our students are achieving great things across our schools, and their success is being noticed throughout the Commonwealth. Earlier this week, as part of DESE Acting Commissioner Russell D. Johnston’s Weekly Update, our Missituk Elementary School students were featured in the Picture of the Week!

The Halloween and Fall Festival seasons can be seen all around us in anticipation of October 31, but there’s also another spirit in the air: school spirit! Our elementary & middle schools have continued to participate in Walking Wednesdays throughout the month. Medford High School capped off Spirit Week today with a Students vs. Staff Flag Football game. Meanwhile, over at the Andrews Middle School, sixth grade students enjoyed listening to motivational speaker Jesse Greene and his “Chainsaws, Cheeseburgers, and Rock N’ Roll” presentation. Among many other examples of our students coming together, Missituk students joined members of the community in the Jumpstart Read for the Record

When it comes to Trick-or-Treating during the Halloween season, here are a few tips for staying safe and healthy from Mass General Brigham:

  • Be mindful of costumes. Costume designs or props that are baggy or include poor-fitting shoes can cause children to easily trip.
  • Carry glow sticks or flashlights, use reflective tape on costumes and bags, and wear light colors to help kids see and be seen by drivers.
  • Stick together, especially for groups of trick-or-treaters walking without an adult.
  • Be sure to monitor the amount of candy eaten on and after Halloween.

Students with food allergies, diabetes, and other medical conditions often get left out of Trick-or-Treating. You can help by providing some non-food treats for trick-or-treaters and placing a teal pumpkin in front of your home to indicate you have these treats available. Visit Here for more information.

Have a safe and happy Halloween! Upcoming spooky season events can be found below.

Community Input Requested for City Planning

The City of Medford is also asking for public input as they work on a 5-Year Consolidated Plan to fund programs supporting city residents. The survey was created to gather community input on housing and community development needs, including funding for affordable housing, economic development, public services, and improvements to infrastructure and public facilities.

Participation in the survey is anonymous and can be taken in a variety of languages. Visit the hyperlinks below to access the questionnaire.
