Superintendent's Weekly Memo - November 8, 2024

Superintendent's Weekly Memo - November 8, 2024
Dr. Marice Edouard-Vincent, Superintendent

Dear Mustang Families,

This past Tuesday marked Election Day, a day where we all experienced democracy in action. In the United States of America, the democratic process protects citizens' rights to participate in our local, state and national elections. Therefore, respecting the election process is fundamental to upholding democratic principles while ensuring the will of the people is accurately represented in the outcome. Here in Medford, with the passing of Questions 7 and 8, Mustang Nation is extremely grateful for our community’s continued support of our schools.

Last Sunday, our Medford Mustang Marching Band became Division 2 New England Scholastic Band Association (NESBA) champions for the second year in a row! Their performances, packed with passion and dedication, continue to dazzle audiences everywhere. Great job, Mustangs!

More information about their win can be found later on in the memo.

Next Monday, Nov. 11, Medford Public Schools will be closed in honor of Veterans Day. This Veterans Day, we honor and thank all the brave men and women who have served in our military. Their sacrifices and dedication protect our freedoms and ensure our safety. Please take a moment to reflect on their courage and commitment while recognizing the importance of supporting our veterans.

Today’s Memo includes:

  • Marching Band Wins NESBA Division 2 Title
  • Unified Sports Senior Night & Winter Sports Registration Reminder
  • Holiday Fundraiser & Logo Usage Information
  • Job Openings
  • Upcoming Events

Marching Band Win NESBA Championship for 2nd Year in a Row

Our Medford Mustang Marching Band became Division 2 NESBA champions while performing their 2024 show, After the Rain. Our band won caption awards for Best Visual Performance, Best Color Guard, and Best Overall Effect. Additionally, Kian Liao and Benjamin Wirz received the award for Best Drum Majors. Visit Here to watch their full performance.

Our Mustangs also claimed the top spot with a platinum award and a score of 95.37, making them the only band in Divisions 1, 2, or 3 to achieve a platinum award!

The band includes students from Medford High School, Medford Vocational Technical High School, and both the Andrews and McGlynn Middle Schools. Congratulations to all our students and our first-year band director, Michael Dampier, on a fantastic fall season!

Unified Sports Celebrate Senior Day & Winter Sports Registration Deadline Reminder

Our Unified Sports Basketball Team also capped off a great fall season earlier this week with a victory on Senior Night! To our seniors, thank you for the impact you have made in our school community. We look forward to seeing you create more memories before the school year ends!

As a reminder, registration for winter sports tryouts is currently open to all middle school and high school students. We offer a wide variety of sports to our students, including basketball, hockey, indoor track, cheerleading, gymnastics, swimming, and wrestling.

Visit Here to register for tryouts ahead of the Nov. 18 deadline. All athletes must complete the online registration and provide an up-to-date physical (within 13 months) to the nurse's office before tryouts.

Holiday Fundraisers & Logo Usage

The holiday season is quickly upon us, and this time of year represents an especially charitable period. Many of our school PTO’s and student groups will be holding events and fundraisers to raise money for their respective causes while positively impacting our school community.

Please note that all school-sponsored fundraisers must be approved by appropriate school and district leaders. MPS-approved fundraisers will only ask for payments made towards an official school-sponsored group and never to a specific individual.

Similarly, MPS logo or branding is only permitted on school-sponsored events or in association with school-approved organizations, vendors and partners. Use of the MPS logo or branding in fundraising efforts not directly connected to the school could cause confusion among our community members and may imply that the school endorses or sponsors initiatives in which we are not formally involved.

If you have any concerns about a fundraiser event or logo usage, please contact the Office of the Superintendent for confirmation.
