Superintendent's Weekly Memo - November 15, 2024
Dear Mustang Families,
November is a time where we begin to reflect on the year at large and take time to appreciate what we are thankful for. While the Thanksgiving dinner table is a time for many to express these feelings, I can’t help but share how grateful I am for seeing our school community come together!
Last Friday night, our Brooks Elementary School students and families joined one another at their first Open Mic Night of the year! Students had the opportunity to let their talent shine on stage. Thank you to all those who attended, and great job to our student performers!
On Tuesday of this week, our Medford High School students had the privilege of listening to our local veterans in celebration of Veterans Day. They had the opportunity to ask questions and hear stories from those who served. Later on that afternoon, our school community gathered to celebrate the opening of the new Krystle Campbell Memorial Garden.
Ahead of the Thanksgiving break, please make sure to mark your calendars regarding the school schedule. Wednesday, Nov. 27 will be an early release day, and schools will be closed on Thursday, November 28 and Friday, November 29.
Today’s Memo includes:
- Assistance Dog Coming to MHS
- 100 Years of Medford High School Yearbooks Now Digitalized
- Food Services Staff Trained By Fellow Staff Member

Assistance Dog Coming to MHS
We are excited to share that the Medford Public Schools Counseling Department has been matched with an assistance dog! The assistance dog will be a member of the counseling department working to support students and staff. Our newest member of Mustang Nation is expected to join MPS after Thanksgiving.
Our Director of School Counseling, Ms. Stacey Schulman, will be the handler and primary caregiver for the dog. The dog will primarily stay in her office area at Medford High School but may occasionally be seen in the halls or lobby. When outside her office, the dog will always be on a leash.
Given that the dog will primarily be located at MHS, we are asking families and caregivers of high school students to please contact your school nurse in relation to any dog allergies:
House M: Sara Kelly, MSN, BSN, RN - skelly@medford.k12.ma.us
House H: Patricia Cooney, M.Ed., RN, NCSN - pcooney@medford.k12.ma.us
House S: Christine Cullinane, BSN, RN - ccullinane@medford.k12.ma.us
When Ms. Schulman and the dog are scheduled to visit a classroom across Medford Public Schools, families and caregivers will receive prior communication from the appropriate staff member. A wider announcement about our newest member of Mustang Nation will be shared with the community in the near future.
100 Years of Medford High School Yearbooks Now Digitalized
Our collection of Medford High School yearbooks, dating from 1924 to 2023, have recently been digitalized and are now available to view on our website. Visit Here to see 100 years of Mustang history!
This project was overseen by the Digital Commonwealth, the Boston Public Library and the Massachusetts statewide digitalization team. Together, their mission is to digitalize cultural heritage materials held by the Massachusetts libraries, museums and archives to preserve historic materials before they deteriorate and become lost forever.
Thank you to MHS Library Teacher Maria D’Orsi, MHS ELA Teacher and Yearbook Advisor David Ambrose and our digitalization partners for their valuable and gracious service to our Mustang Community.
Food Services Staff Trained By Fellow Staff Member
Our cafeteria workers and staff across our MPS Food Services Department furthered their professional development last week after participating in an Emergency Choke Saver Training.
Organized by our Food Services Director Retta Smith, the training was presented by Jack Paster at MHS, a science teacher at the school and a certified emergency medical technician.
The training, titled “When seconds count, would you know what to do?" covered common choking hazards, how to recognize when someone is choking, and the necessary steps to clear the choking material. We sincerely appreciate Ms. Smith, Mr. Paster and our food services staff for keeping our students healthy and safe.
