The Center for Citizenship and Social Responsibility (CCSR) was founded in 2012 within Medford Public Schools to promote social-emotional learning, student leadership, and civic responsibility. It is an after-school program empowers students to become changemakers by addressing pressing social issues such as climate change, addiction, bullying, prejudice, racism, pollution, gender bias, poverty, and inequities in education and healthcare. By designing and carrying out meaningful, student-led projects, participants build essential leadership skills while making a lasting difference in their communities and beyond.

Dedicated to developing socially conscious leaders, the CCSR collaborates with teachers and school administrators across the district to foster civic engagement, resilience, and social-emotional intelligence. Through hands-on, real-world learning experiences, students develop empathy, confidence, and a sense of purpose—qualities vital for academic success and lifelong impact.

At the heart of the program is Youth Empowerment, which equips students with the knowledge, skills, and support to take initiative, make informed decisions, and lead with compassion in both local and global contexts.

Funding for the CCSR has been generously provided by the Cummings Foundation, the Krystle Campbell Community Betterment Fund, and Bloomberg Philanthropies.

This year over 50 projects were carried out by students from the Andrews, McGlynn, Roberts, Missituk, Brooks, and Medford High School. From making sure our town is clean and green to raising money and supplies for the less fortunate and impoverished, these students really have done an amazing job.
